iChat - won't let me login

I just got my MacBookPro and everything works amazingly except I can't login to iChat. I use my normal login and password but it constantly says I have the wrong password. I've tried listing that I've forgotten my password to reset it but that doesn't work either. I wonder if because I skipped a set-up for mail at the beginning whether that is linked to it? Any ideas?

I have the same problem, but that solution doesn't work. iChat has had that problem since yesterday and neither AIM nor MobileMe will work.

Hi,

You say "normal login and Password".

Do you mean you have an AIM name that you used somewhere else before that did work ?
Do you mean MobileMe name and password that works elsewhere like Mail ?

iChat can use Screen Names that are registered with AIM or Apple email IDs from MobileMe that are recognised as valid AIM names (As well as older style @Mac.com names)
iChat can also use Jabber and GoogleTalk names (Google requires that you Enable Talk on your Google Account).

The ID you use to Login to Apple Discussions or iTunes may not be a valid iChat Screen Name.

Hi,

The Original Poster sounds like he may have an issue similar to this
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12063670#12063670

Defcom seems to be saying that there may be an issue with the AIM servers.
I am not seeing anything myself (About the same number of Buddies appear logged in) and have had no problem logging in myself (Having just tested a third AIM valid Name I have).

I would start with a simple Restart of the computer.
If that does not work I would tend to wait.

As Defcom says, whist Logged out you can change the Login Port.
this will effectively rewrite the .plist involved and save deleting it and restarting iChat.

Hi guys,

after hours of desperately trying to get iChat to work I finally decided to take iChat out of my dock and replace it with another program. The Mac AIM client wouldn't connect either but I was able to establish a connection using Adium, one of the best free Chat clients out there. It has a lot of options and extensions and works accross all major networks. Give it a try, it worked like a charm!

ok, sept 8 now, I can't login to iChat either today. New iChat user today, with longtime .mac account for iTunes etc. Even created new account for AIM user, myself today.

I start iChat, try to login, does not recognize my user name or password. Won't allow me to sign in to add buddies etc.

I have a .mac account, won't let me login. Created new AIM account, won't let me log in. Tried the SErver change settings from 5190 to 443 - no joy! Any ideas out there or is it "death by phone sweat!" Thanks.

I have had the exact same problem as EnglishBayDon - and had independently tried the same things - an established .me account and a brand new AIM account. I have iChat 4.0.6. No, this iChat had never been tried before. I don't know anything about a Mac Firewall - where it is or if on or off. I don't remember ever having turned one on. My daughter-in-law was able to use her new MacBookPro with a niece who had used iChat before. The d-i-l would like to use iChat with me. We did try Skype and that worked. But why should iChat be so frustrating?
