Hello GardinerPG,
From your post it appears that you are having a problem hearing on calls.
The article that you came from, If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker, has great steps to take if this happens.
If the issue continues, let's try and isolate it further.
Make sure the Set the ring/silent switch is set to ring.
Tap on Settings > Accessibility > Audio /Visual.
Slide the audio volume balance slider all the way to the right.
Listen to the device speaker.
Repeat the steps above, changing the audio volume balance slider to the left instead.
Listen to the device speaker.
If no sound plays or if the sound is distorted or muffled, it's likely the device is experiencing a hardware issue.
When you're done testing, be sure to return the audio volume balance slider to its previous setting.
Cheers.

I’ve tried that but still get no volume when making or receiving calls. When I make a call it shows speaker is off.
It’s only on calls. I get volume on videos or listening to music.
Very annoying! Am I doing something stupid?
I’ll do that. Thanks for your help, Matthew.
