Cannot access Google Drive in Safe Boot

While troubleshooting an issue with Microsoft Word on their website, I was instructed to try booting in safe mode and trying to safe a word document (on Google Drive). However, when I booted in safe mode, I found that I can no longer access Google Drive, even from the Finder. I get this error message:

Is Google Drive supposed to work in Safe Mode?

The message in the image says "There was a problem connection to the server "localhost". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."

My internet connection still works in safe mode.
