shortcut to call a specific phone number - apple watch set up using family sharing
Hi all, hoping you have some creative ideas for me.
I am setting up an apple watch for my younger sister, who is developmentally disabled. She does not have an iphone, so I am setting it up from my iPhone, using family sharing.
I want to add a big, prominent shortcut on the home screen of the watch, for her to call me.
What I'm seeing:
The only option is for her to do the following:
- push the digital crown
- scroll to the "phone" icon
- select it
- select "contacts"
- scroll to my name
- select it
My sister is at about the cognitive level of a first or second grader. She can read, but not well. There's no way she's going to be able to follow this many complicated steps.
Other options:
- hold down the rectangular button for a second
- swipe right on the button for "medical id"
- scroll down to my name (I'm an emergency contact)
- select me
A little better because it's fewer steps, but still too much. And I'm concerned that she would either power the watch down or call emergency services by mistake.
When I google "watch shortcut call number" every result I see involves the "shortcuts" app. Which I can't use, presumably because I set up the watch using family sharing. The shortcuts app is disabled, and when I try to install it, it says "requires iPhone".
One other thing I did think of was to try training her to ask Siri to call me. I haven't had a chance to try that yet (the watch is a gift and I haven't given it to her yet), but I'm doubtful that it will work, because her speech patterns are difficult for even people who know her well to understand. Maybe Apple's voice recognition tech will be able to make sense of her, but I'd be surprised.
Any other thoughts or ideas on how to accomplish this? I'm bringing her over from a gizmo watch, which is designed specifically for children, and I'm honestly starting to wonder if I made the wrong decision. This is one of the major reasons why I bought her the watch and am paying for the separate phone line on it. I need her to be able to call me or her caregiver should she need help, and didn't expect this to be such a difficult request.
