why is login to icloud.com and discussions.apple.com failing

When I visit any Apple website and try and login, I get an Apple ID popup like this one (Apple ID blanked out):



If I click on Continue with Password, then enter my Apple ID password, it fails. Repeatedly, in new windows, after restarting Safari, changing AppleID password, rebooting, etc.


If I click on Cancel, then the Apple webpage loads a Sign In screen:



The sign in succeeds, using the same password and apple ID. What is going on here?

We appreciate knowing the situation is persisting across multiple devices. To clarify, you’re using the same Apple ID on both, correct? Do they share anything else? For example, the same macOS version or have you migrated your user and data from one to the other? 


In System Preferences > Apple ID, are you being prompted to log in with your Apple ID for verification at all? 


Next, we’d like to have you boot to safe mode and test this same login. How to use safe mode on your Mac

We understand you’re encountering an issue signing in to certain sites with your Apple ID.


When the login fails, is there an error message? If so, what does it say. You mentioned that the Apple ID is blanked out on these screens, which means it would be hard to tell if the Apple ID you're being prompted for is was the correct one. If you click on ‘Use a different Apple ID’ what happens? Are you using the same Apple ID for these sign ins that you use in System Preferences > Apple ID for iCloud?

AnnieL2, there is no error message. When the password is entered, the dialog jitters, indicating wrong password. Every time a password is typed in and enter is pressed.


The apple ID is not blanked out in the display, it shows the correct apple id. I blanked it out for privacy when I posted the image.


I only have one Apple ID, so I did not try to use a different apple ID. However, when the ‘Use a different Apple ID’ button is clicked, the pop up disappears, exactly the same as pressing cancel. That brings up the web page ‘Sign in to iCloud’, and it succeeds.


I tried the same thing on a second Mac, a power book, and it had the same issue.
