I need to recover my phone but my version of Mac OS is incompatible with iTunes - is there a non iTunes method that is supported by Apple?

Google search reveals many offerings, but wary of using those.

See Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support. In newer versions of macOS you use Finder rather than iTunes.
