USB C sound output

Trying to run theater sound from an iPad Pro 3 gen running iOS 15.2.1. I have a third party USB C to 3.5 mm adapter connected to a 3.5 mm to RCA cable connected to the sound system.

but sound keeps coming out of the device speaker and no signal is going into the sound board.
