password reset of Macintosh hd data

I recently got my dads MacBook Air 2019 one and I couldn't update it and noticed that 99gb out of 120gb is taken up by other volumes and while trying to figure out how to delete it the hd data asked for a password but I do not know it and was wondering if there was anyway to reset it

Hey there, and welcome to Apple Support Communities, steph_1281!

From our understanding, the HD data drive on your dads computer is locked with a password. We can certainly understand your concern and can help provide some insight.

It sounds like your dad may have enabled FileVault. You will need the password to disable it. You can learn more about that here: Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support

If this doesn’t look like the password you’re dealing with, give us a few more details and, we’ll go from there.

Kindest regards!
