Use Microsoft 365 in iOS Mail App - with Active Sync Disable

Hi,

I was wondering if I'm missing something - I used to be able to get my work email (Microsoft 365) on my phone via the iOS standard Mail app. We have now turned off Active Sync and, as expected, my work email is no longer syncing as the iOS Mail app seems to require ActiveSync to work.

Literally, all third party mail apps, such as Sparks, Edison Mail, etc, support Microsoft 365 email and allow me to sync my email even with Active Sync turned off at the server level. However, despite going through the 'sing-in' process, the iOS default Mail app returns an error message that the account could not be authenticated. I just want to make sure that this is an iOS Mail app limitation (it works fine on the Macbook Mail App) and that Apple does not currently support what Microsoft terms 'modern authentication' with ActiveSync turned off - I don't like running multiple mail apps on my iOS device and prefer having all my mail in one app. Is anyone aware if Apple plans to support mail sync via modern authentication without ActiveSync, which currently seems to be a prerequisite for it to work? Particularly as Microsoft will retire ActiveSync in the near future.

Thank you

Did you remove the account from your phone and re-add it as an IMAP account instead of ActiveSync?

If not, you need to do that. If so, and it still doesn't work, talk to your IT department about it.

I have no idea where you got the idea that ActiveSync would be 'retired in the near future', but that's not even close to correct as far as I know. Basic Authentication for ActiveSync was deprecated a while ago, but not ActiveSync...

Welcome thebeingthatisi!

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities! If we understand correctly, you're not getting your work email since disabling Active Sync. We can completely understand wanting to only use one app for your mail!

Let's check the settings: Set up Exchange ActiveSync on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. We're suggesting this as a first step because it does address modern authentication under step 3. You might need to remove then add the mail again to get it working. Also, as a suggestion it might be great to contact your work IT department as they might have the exact set up or settings you'll need to be successful.

Take care!
