Try booting to Safe Mode. That boot up takes minutes and clears caches and other things that may resolve your problem.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

A lot of times just boot to Safe Mode followed by normal boot resolves problems.

If still problem download and run this app so we can find more information about your installation.

https://etrecheck.com/upgrade

It shows what is launched and other information and is very useful in finding causes of problems. After you first launch the app make sure you check Enable full disk access in the box in lower left.

After running the app use the app's feature to paste to clipboard. Then paste it in the text box for a reply in this forum click on the addition text icon. This is because the normal reply text box limits how much you can type.

o personal identifiable information is contained if the app output. The app was written for a person who is contributor to these Apple Support Communities

Nothing. Laptop was on with Mail, Messages, Calendar, FT, Preview and Pages. Certainly things the Mac has had no trouble with the in past.

Keychain a week ago to find a password for a website -didn't alter any settings (and don't think that was the "System" keychain but rather one of the 2 at the top. OHHH I did update to 12.2.2?

Thank you for your reply

Since then I gave in and pressed reset to defaults. The pop ups kept coming up every few seconds, even when I hadn't cancelled the last one.

Probably unrelated by my MacBook Air is running very slow. It seems sluggish in a memory-type way. Which is odd for first months when I got it it could handle anything without complaint. It was better than my old 15" Retina Pro. I don't run anything serious like movie or sound editing, CAD or ML modelling,

I learnt the hard lesson yonks ago not to use third party utilities when things go wrong. So sticking to Apple stuff (but might give Etre a go if you think helpful) So if anyone can suggest anything.
