how do I change sound outpu to mono?

Wondering which MacOS version you are using on your MacBook Air
The setting below is available on Big Sur 11.6.3, (Hope it works for you :-)
Click the Black Apple at top right in Mac top menu.
Choose System Preferences
Click the round blue "Accessibility" icon in the Window that opens
Choose Audio from the left menu
click to tick, in the box beside "Play stereo as mono"
