Mac stuck looking for update running big sur
iMac 21.5″ 4K, macOS 11.6
Make sure the hard disk has at least 5 GB more than 15% free of total space.
Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Storage -> Manage if you need help managing the space.
Clear any install data or installer files you don't need, and try to redownload the update from Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Software Update. Note, upgrades are managed through the App Store.

There seems to be an ongoing issue with the Software Update Applet in System Preferences especially on Big Sur and above.
Suggest restarting in Safe Mode and run the Software Update again.
