Why can’t security updates be done via Data by users without WiF?!?!

Why doesn’t Apple allow IPhone owners to download security updates through their cellular data plan as an alternative for those people who do NOT have access to reliable and regularly available WiFi??? Other phone brands have this feature, which removes a major obstacle for some of their customers, and would likely help to insure return business by those customers and others who appreciate the the inclusion of an alternative option. This is INCREDIBLY Frustrating and seemingly, a needless inconvenience to those of us with this problem.

Appreciate the response but I’m not sure that it’s completely accurate. I’ve attempted to follow Apple instructions and turned 5gUC on and still don’t seem to be able to make a download without an actual WiFi connection. WiFi is also activated but doesn’t have a WiFi account to connect with. Is it actually possible to make security updates without a WiFi connection? If so I would love to know how. I don’t mean to sound flippant or sarcastic I am legitimately looking for help here.

It is not a “needless” inconvenience. It is extremely “needful” to protect the carrier’s cellular infrastructure. Carriers do not want hundreds of millions of iPhones updating over their networks at the same time and potentially crashing the worldwide cellular system. It’s not Apple’s decision; it is the carriers protecting their network.

If you have an iPhone 12 or 13 with a 5G connection you CAN update over the 5G network, because 5G has hundreds of times more bandwidth than other technologies.
