do I really need the 50gb of extra storage? My free storage amount shows I don’t

You seem to have answered your own question. I would say though that for US$0.99 per month you get all the iCloud space you will need for the foreseeable future.


As Manage your iCloud storage advises, you can use that space for your iCloud backups, to keep your photos and videos stored in iCloud Photos, to keep your documents up to date in iCloud Drive and more.


Before you decide that the free 5GB plan is sufficient look at the iCloud Support Page.
