'Check Spelling While Typing' not working on Safari

I disabled a couple of weeks ago the check spelling function on Safari in the Edit tab, but now I cannot re-activate it. When I'm typing somewhere, like in this forum right now, and I go to Edit > Spelling and Grammer, the 'Check Spelling While Typing' option appears either greyed out and thus not selectable, or sometimes it appears selectable but when I click on it nothing happens.


This is getting very annoying, as it doesn't let me notice when I make errors when I'm writing anywhere on the internet. The problem is only in Safari. In other apps like Pages or Notes it works perfectly, and any errors are underscored in red as usual.


Can someone help me?

Has an Application called " Grammarly " even been installed and is still installed and / or removed.


If not >>


1 - Suggest restarting in Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time -Normal.


2 - Does the issue present in this mode ?


3 - If not - there could be something in the main User Account playing up. To further isolate this - Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac. Then log out of the Main User account and log into the dummy account and test again if the issue persists.


4 - If the issue is present in the dummy account - then this appears to be a System Wide issue.


5 - Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor. And Safe to use.


The application is free or paid from added features. 


Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).



It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.


 The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information. 


Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )


We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.


Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.


This includes AntiVirus, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.


This will include CleanMyMac 


This will include BitDefender 


This will included Norton Antivirus


Sophos Av Software


Intego AntiVirus


McAfee


MacKeeper


Avast AntiViru 


Ad Guard


The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

Remove as per the Developers Instructions.


Do not install an Uninstaller to perform this task. Reason, they too tend to do more harm than good. In so doing it make a bad situation even worse.


Once below is done - one may or may not require doing an In-Place Re-Installation of macOS.


This is done via Recovery Mode - for Intel based computer it is Command + r Immediately at restart. It presents options and choose Reinstall macOS.


For Apple Silicon M1 based Computers >> Use macOS Recovery on a Mac with Apple silicon and choose the Reinstall macOS


The above will install macOS again without touching Setting, Preferences and personal Files and Applications.


The reason this maybe required is to replace elements of the OS that CMM ( CleanMyMac ) has damaged, modified, altered, removed or corrupted.



As per their instructions


The best and more effective way is using the Uninstaller module of CleanMyMac X, which reliably removes all traces and supporting files of any app.

Here’s how to remove CleanMyMac X with Uninstaller:

  1. Open CleanMyMac X and go to Uninstaller.
  2. Find and select CleanMyMac X in the list of apps.
  3. Click Uninstall.

CleanMyMac will remove itself leaving no leftovers on your Mac.
