Split Screen not working

I have tried every trick in the book and I cannot for the life of me get split screen to work! I am trying to split screen and see preview on one side and word on the other side in order to type an outline for my school notes. It always says no windows available in split view. PLEASE. HELP. ME! Is this something that cannot be done anymore? It's no huge deal but the convenience of not having to click back and forth and constantly resize the screen is super helpful.

Thank you!

Update: I got it!!! It will not work with by hovering over the green button. I had to put word in full screen on a separate desktop using mission control, then drag the other document I wanted on top of the full screen word document in order for them to get into split screen. A bit of a hassle, but I can finally type notes in peace :)

I followed the instructions in Help => Mac Help.

  1. On your Mac, move the pointer to the green button in the top-left corner of the window, then choose Tile Window to Left of Screen or Tile Window to Right of Screen from the menu that appears.
  2. On the other side of the screen, click the second app you want to work with.
  3. The Split View is created in a new desktop space.
