If the machine's power management got a surge it may create a situation where your battery could get overcharged, or the battery could be bad. But in general, unless you need the processing power it doesn't need to be plugged in except when you are in the final 15% of charge. I have used laptops fully charged all day to no ill effect in a well ventilated area.
Those with batteries that are almost dead you have to do this anyway.
If the battery ever shows sign of inflating the case, bring it to a Authorized service technicial to disconnect and/or replace. You do not want to be charging batteries if they have a risk of a heat runaway.
