NVMe SSD into a USB-A hub?

I have a 5k iMac (late 2014) with several HDD connected via a USB-A v3 hub. I want to future-proof any external SSD I buy now so that they will work OK with future Thunderbolt 3 inputs.

I want to ask if a NVMe M.2 PCle SSD board mounted into a USB-C enclosure will work OK with my present hub using a suitable USB-C to USB-A adapter, albeit at a reduced speed?

iMac 27″, macOS 11.6

It should, but I would recommend that you get a high-quality SSD, such as a LaCie Mobile SSD Secure USB-C Drive - Apple. For your older Mac, you will also need this cable.
