Just ran into the same issue as well. Its distorted and when I use the water ejection from the control center on the watch it sounds really weird but no water comes out. When I get calls its terrible on the speaker.

At first I thought the notification sound wasn't working but then realized it's the speaker.

When I went into Apple support website, searching "distorted speaker" it took me straight to the repair page. There was no troubleshooting guide so I guess I am sending the Apple Watch 7 in.

Hello Mikeoveral,

Apple Support Communities is a great place for help with your Apple Watch Series 7, and we’re glad you were directed here from the Restart your Apple Watch article.

To confirm, are you having issues with all audio quality? For example, audio on calls and notifications? If so, and with having already restarted, the next step would be to contact Apple. You can find their contact details via the Get Support website.

Take care!

"Happy" to read I'm not the only one with this issue. I bought my Apple Watch Series 7 45 mm in October 2021, and after a couple of months, the speaker sounded very distorted as you say. Restarting or using the eject water didn't help at all. I continued to use it for a while until it really started to **** me off, so in early April 2022 I finally took it to the dealer, and I got a brand new one for the warranty. Sadly, already after small 3 weeks, the problem came back.

I really don't understand why. The one thing I can think of, is that I work in an environment where the watch can get a little dusty. Just regular dust. Every night before I leave work, I clean the watch. But as I know the Watch is dust resistant, so I don't get why that would be an issue. A couple of years ago I had a Series 5 watch, and I was working at the exact same place as now, and I never had this issue.

I'm taking this 2nd Series 7 back to the dealer again, even though I hate to do it after just 3 weeks of using the new one. Maybe I will get a new one again. I feel Apple should look into this. Maybe it's a common problem with the Series 7?

I had same problem with my series 6. They sent me a replacement and Exactly one month later replacement watch did the same thing with the distortion of the speaker. If you could reply back with an update on how your new watch is doing that would be great. Unfortunately I did not purchase AppleCare and my watch started acting up just a month out of warranty.

So far no issues with the replacement but it’s only been about 2 months.

I normally don’t bother with Apple Care either since I know for the most part Apple products are well made.

If you don’t use the speaker much it might not matter. But since I have the cellular Watch plan and don’t need my phone when I go for a walk it’s just more convenient.

Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear you had experience. I’m not an Apple fanboy by any means. Was windows/ms person myself.

if you don’t need the greatest or newest the Apple Watch SE might be the way to go. I tried cheaper watches that were pretty good but didn’t seem to take advantage of the Apple ecosystem well which I assume has more to do with the Apple wall garden. Also Android OS is cumbersome but that’s a personal preference.

never understood all the different yearly models though. Just small incremental improvements.
