When holding down alt (option) on boot my 2009 iMac doesn't do anything, it just boots straight to the SSD. I've tried both an Apple Keyboard and Microsoft Keyboard, both wired. Any ideas? Thanks!

FWIW, it may be a timing issue. If you have a startup chime you need to press and hold Option right after it. Same with any other key combination. If you don't have a startup chime, you need to press and hold Option as soon as the screen changes from black to gray. You also need to hold the key or keys until you see the Apple logo and progress bar.

Can you tell us what you are expecting to happen? Do you have other bootable partitions?
I have a bootable USB plugged in, but even if the USB was unbootable it should still show the drive select, just it would be Macintosh HD and nothing else. Also, no other combinations seem to work on boot either
