How to delete from the recently used e-mail address list?

When typing _e-mail addresses_ in a new mail, it pops up a list of _suggested addresses_ below the field where I am typing. Some of those addresses are already unwanted. *How do I delete them?* I have tried highlighting them and pressing delete but it doesn't seem to work.
