Hi! Yes, that is exactly the way how you should do it. Was the app completely downloaded? Downloading Xcode and installing the app from the AppStore takes some time - be patient. What does the status in the AppStore app say? Does it say "OPEN"? Another option would be to try launching Xcode from the command line in the Terminal.app. You can launch the app with the following command:

$ /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode

This will print out lots of information in the terminal window where you might find a reason for your launch problem. Best of luck!

It should be fine then. Try downloading Xcode from the developer site instead.

Try an update to 12.2.1—if that’s not what you’re running—and see if things work better.

Any add-on anti-malware apps, add-on VPN apps, add-on anti-virus apps, add-on cleaner apps, or similar installed? If so, remoce those per the vendors’ instructions, and try again.

Is this a new MacBook Air or an older one? Some of the older models have bad hard drives. Expanded and running Xcode for the first time is an extremely intense operation. If you have one of those machines with a bad SSD, then it might not ever work.
