AirPods 3rd generation skin detection problem

My AirPods 3 regularly connect to my iPhone when they are in my pants pockets and occasionally when they are just laying on the table. As a result i often lose my place in an audio book or podcast, or lose the audio if I am on the phone. Has anyone encountered this? Would it be covered by AppleCare? Alternatively is there a small non charging case or pouch I could use?

thank you

Hi Michel Corbin,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. We'd like to help out. If we understand correctly, your AirPods seem to be connecting to your device unexpectedly. Is that right?

To verify, are they out of the case when this happens? Has it ever happened when they're in the charging case?

Under Settings > Bluetooth, tap the "i" next to your AirPods. How do you have "Automatic Ear Detection" set currently? If it's off, try turning it on and see if that helps.

Best wishes.

Hi, thank you for responding. Yes, the AirPods 3 are out of the case when this happens. Typically they are loose in my pants pockets but occasionally it has happened when they were just (loose) on my work table. One time I was even on a different floor and answered the iPhone on the handset itself only to realise that the audio was going to my AirPods one floor above. I do have Automatic Ear Detection turned on.

regards
