Trying to enter "y=20x-4" into a table in Numbers where x is the input and y is the output. In the example there is just "20x(cell number)-4" but I can't get that to work. This is a project for school and the instructions are for excel, trying to translate to Numbers. Thanks in advance for your help!

I think you are just missing the = before the 20
Numbers works very much like excel for entering formulas, type = then your formula
Aside from minor mechanics of how to enter the formula, which you can get via Help > Numbers Help in your menu, the general approach in Numbers will be almost exactly like Excel. Good luck with your assignment!
