2 months into owning my iPhone 12 I see no reason or pattern for it asking me to enter my passcode so often. Several times it has asked when I had just exited and locked the screen. This is a great inconvenience as it isn’t always easy to enter the code because of nighttime, I’m moving, eyeglasses not handy or in a rush. Please tell me there is a fix!

It should only ask for it if you open the phone or do a secure process
If it is a chore then turn on Touch ID or Face ID.

I suggest you may have Raise to wake or Tap to open turned on.
Turn them off in Settings, Screen and Brightness, and Settings, Accessibility, Touch respectively.

Touch ID is not an option in my settings, I have Face ID set up and it works well but still occasionally asks to enter Passcode even when I had just exited and locked the screen, seems to happen when most inconvenient.
Raise to wake or Tap to open is off.
I said either or. I can't tell in my browser if you had a Face ID phone.
It will bypass Face ID if it cannot see your face full on or if your eyes are closed or distracted.
If it is set up as you say then I am afraid you may be fumbling the close process.
