My Apple Watch 6 is set to 'always on', but after I updated to 8.4.2 the screen goes dark a few seconds after I lower my wrist, and it requires a tap to light up. I’ve powered the watch off and back on with no effect.

Do a forced restart, hold in both buttons, wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons.
At first I thought this worked, but then the screen went dark again. Not the solution.
