Cleaning very dirty airpod external mic screens

I have waxy ears, work in a dusty wood shop, and use my Airpods daily. Even though I try to clean them regularly using the recommended fine brushing / wiping down, the screens are just packed with a lovely combo of wax and dust. Brushing doesn't come close to cutting it.

My first impulse is to clean them using a light application of alcohol or xylene on a rag or acid brush to dissolve the wax, probably in front of a small vacuum to keep the liquid out of the grille as much as possible. Any other ideas out there?
