Charging within the official Apple case.

Hi,

I have seen the caveat on the apple ipad batteries web page cautioning not to charge the ipad in 'some' cases.

I have read the discussion here asking what everyone else is doing.

However I have not yet seen any offical recommendations as to if charging within the apple case is recommended or not.

Has anybody got any info on this?

Cheers

J

Can you post a link to that?

I have been charging my iPad for 4 months (give or take) inside of the official iPad case. No issues.

You do have to remove it from the case to use the iPad dock or keyboard dock, but that has nothing to do with charging, just that Apple messed up the design of the case.

I assume that some cases might not allow for airflow which could overheat the iPad while charging, but without reading it myself, that's mere speculation.

Hi:

As requested here are the things I referred to in my first post:

The other thread on in-case charging:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11507568&#11507568

Caveat on charging within 'some' cases:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html
(see side bar: 'let it breathe' bottom right)

Hope that this helps. I assume that the Apple case would be OK.

...But I guess that it is still possible that the batteries can run hot enough to degrade their life while still not hot enough to throw the 'too hot' on-screen error message. The above link cites the operating parameters as per the spec but cryptically also states that keeping it as close to 22C (72F) is 'recommended' for maximum life....

It would be interesting to see how much the temp of the alu outer skin (and hence batteries) rises during (10W fast) charging with and without the apple case?

I suppose I am a bit jumpy; I had the 'dual USB' white ibook with the firmware that fried the battery... but no replacement under warranty ...naughty Apple!

Cheers

Hi,

I thought that I would do some digging and found this:

For Li-ion batteries At 100% charge, after 1 year:

Temperature: 25C 80%

Capacity: 40C 65%

Pretty frightening. Esp if you extrapolate to 2yrs.

The next question is how much does the apple case raise the temp. I would guess a good few degrees C. I think I have a type-K thermocouple somewhere I will see if I can find it and tuck it into the case when the ipad is charging.

Cheers J
