HEIC to JPEG conversion program changes the taken date.

I have pictures from 2018-2019 that were taken on iPhone under the HEIC format. Unfortunately this format is not compatible with my photo programs. I have tried a converter program (HEIC to JPEG) and I am now able to see the photos. The problem is that the converter changes the taken date to the date of the conversion instead of keeping all of the metadata with the original dates. Pictures now will load into the photo program but load as the current day and year. Does anyone know of a program for conversion that will keep tne integrity of the original metadata?

Setting on iPhone has been changed back to JPEG to eliminate problem going forward.
