How to select Google as default search engine on my iPhone?
I have selected google to be my search engine on safari settings on my iPhone. But ecosia remains anyway. What can I do?

mawhyte ~ As you haven't mentioned already trying this, Apple's iPhone User Guide says: "If your iPhone isn’t working right, you can try restarting it.":

Other than the trouble you are having choosing your search engine, what makes you believe that Apple has forced ecosia on people. Have others reported that this is the only search engine they can use? It certainly is not that way on my iPhone or iPad. I have Google selected and it works just fine. I can see ecosia on the list, but it certainly is not selected as the default selection. I would do as stedman1 has recommended and clear your History and Website data in Safari to clear any possible cookie that may be preventing you from changing your search engine selection. Clearing History and Website data is not an extreme response, but a normal action that should be done periodically to clear that data.
I would clear website history and Data in settings, Safari

Until you find a permanent solution, typing your search query followed by #g will automatically open Google results in a new tab. Source:

That is why I had no problem suggesting clearing it. Who wants tens of thousands of website cookies and tracking cookies in there. Unless the OP has a Wordle streak there is no value in keeping all those cookies, one of which is making ecosia the default.

Ecosia is one of the 5 available search engines on an Apple device. Are you using Safari when you see the ecosia search engine, or a different web browser?
More precisely, have selected Google several times but this makes no difference. Ecosia remains.
I did choose it as a possibly more effective broker than Duck Duck but it is hardly an improvement. Searches are less effective on my iPhone now than on my Mac using Google. I regret very much having switched and am very annoyed - and a bit suspicious as to why Apple has forced Ecosia onto users.
Thanks for the suggestion but this is not the help I had hoped for and sounds like an extreme response to what appears to be an iOS system flaw. What is ecosia doing on my iPhone anyway?
I am using Safari. I have been into settings to select Google instead several times, but to no avail.
I'm sorry, I read it wrong and thought that stedman1 suggested it. I was trying to help the OP understand why that was not an extreme response. I don't have a problem with the suggestion either.
No worries, and I agree!
