How long should an iMac screen last?

I have a 21.5-inch iMac purchased in 2013. The other day its display crashed and I could not restore it. Has anyone reported problems with iMac displays? I'm told a screen replacement would cost more than $500, an amount I'm reluctant to spend if there is a fix I'm unaware of. I've attached a screengrab of the display after a reboot.

Even if people have reported issues we’re talking about a 10 year old iMac. Most likely the problem is not the screen itself but the hardware that drives the screen. Like death and taxes electronic devices do fail, sorry to say. As for repairing it I doubt Apple would even consider doing it. A third party repair shop would likely be your only option, if they can get the parts.

Thanks for the prompt reply. If it is, indeed, a hardware issue, I wonder if it's possible to replace the offending hardware — unless, of course, the hardware is soldered and unfixable. I'm a longtime Apple customer and I've had no trouble with my other Apple products. That said, I know that electronics fail; it's just that I expect a pricey tech product like an iMac should be somewhat less prone to failure than other electronics from other suppliers.
