Found iPad

An iPad was recently turned in to my work. We emailed out to everyone and have no idea who it belongs to and received no response from our employees and contractors. I only have a first name of the user that it belonged to. I recently wiped it to see if I could get in or get any contact information and it does have an activation lock. Unfortunately it does not show me the full email address to reach out to the owner and let them know I have their iPad. Is there a way to find out the email address so I can get this iPad back to its rightful owner? Thank you for any help you can provide.

No, there is no way for you to find the owner. The owner has the option of leaving contact information in a lost mode screen message. If they’ve chosen not to do that, then there is nothing you can do. Apple takes no active role at all when it comes to peoples lost or stolen personal property.

Drop it off at Apple or another electronic recycler to be recycled.

These are user forums. I don’t work for Apple and I am not telling you to do anything.

Apple doesn’t take any action with peoples lost or stolen personal property. They don’t take lost or stolen item reports and have no mechanism for anyone to submit such a report. They don’t monitor or search for peoples private property. And unsolicited contacting of their customers would be a violation of their own privacy policy. And for that matter, I don’t know of any consumer product company that does otherwise.

Find My is available to everyone who owns an iPad and they have 100% control over what information they choose to display on their device’s lost mode display.

Wow! That is pretty terrible on Apples part. You are asking me to take a 1000+ dollar piece of equipment someone bought and registered with you. I know you can link a serial number to an email address but instead of helping get this device back in the users hands who already paid you for one you want me to pretty much throw it away and then have the user buy another. That is pretty unbelievable. I’ll keep searching on my own through lost and found groups and do my due diligence before giving it to a recycler who has software to wipe it out and restore it and then resell. What a bad move on apples part. The least y’all could do would be email the associated address and let them know it had been found and supply the contact info of the finder. I am very surprised that a company so innovative and supposedly customer centric would just ask me to throw this out and not facilitate a hand off. Absolutely mind blown.
