Migration assistant doesn't recognise an apple time machine back up on an external disk
I'm trying to re-build my parent's iMac; the OSX has just been re-installed by apple (at a Genius Bar); they completely wiped the hard drive & did a complete reinstall of Mac OSX 12.2; I'm currently updating this to 12.2.1
I have an old time machine back up of the hard drive of this computer (for this purpose, it's relevant, as the computer hasn't had a great deal of work done on it since I created it). The time machine back up is about 16 months old, I think the OSX would be about 10.14.x
The iMac with osx 12.2 recognises & reads my external hard drive with my time machine back up on it. But when I try to use migration assistant on the freshly installed iMac with osx 12.2, migration assistant stalls at the page looking for a time machine source - it's not allowing me to choose the hard drive; instead I'm just getting a spinning wheel that's not connecting to anything.
as a fail safe, I have a manual copy of all of the documents of the two user profiles that I'm trying to re-install on this computer (I managed to copy these files onto another hard drive). Is there a way to use this copy to manually re-load the user profiles? (I didn't copy the system or library folders from the original drive before the system drive was wiped and a fresh copy of OSX 12.2 was installed0
