How do I get excel on my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2012)

You will have to upgrade macOS to Catalina (macOS 10.15).

Microsoft no longer licenses a version of Office that will run on 10.13 (High Sierra).

You can buy Office 2021 or Office 365 online or go to the App store and download Excel. Not sure about the cost.
