My phone screen sometimes is very dark even though the brightness is all the way up

That can happen if the internal temperature is too hot, but before it gets to thermal protection (or even automatic shutdown). It doesn't necessarily give a warning about dimming, but it will if it goes into thermal protection (where it has minimal operation just putting out a message and monitoring the temperature) looking like this.
