List of Fonts Supplied by Monterey Installation

Historically, each time a new OS is released, Apple posts a Knowledge Base article which lists all the fonts installed by the new OS. I’ve found some of the older lists, but nowhere can I find that list for Monterey.

Any ideas? It’s time to pair down the font morass but first of all, ya have to know what type Apple included and which are required and shouldn’t be touched.

I thank you.

For some reason they have not done it for Monterey, which is annoying. See this for a possible replacement

Another scenario to list the installed fonts in Monterey is to use Fontbook to print a report of those fonts. In Fontbook, select All Fonts, and click the first font entry, and press ⌘A to select all of them. This will take some effort so expect the spinning rainbow until all are selected. Then, from the File menu, choose Print… panel. On that panel, select Report Type: Catalog and ☑︎ Show Family. Use an 18 pt Sample size. Then click PDF and choose to either Open in Preview, or Save as PDF.

Looks like this for all installed fonts, though this example is a custom font install:

Although the following installed System fonts are depicted for Catalina, there is no comparable list for Monterey.

The easiest way is to simply look. Especially since Font Book doesn't even list all of the installed fonts.

This could be the pandemic effect. Lots of the little ancillary data files like new screen savers, wallpapers, servers! etc. are missing for Monterey.

They are all required and all baked into the operating system. You won't be removing them.

The vast majority of these fonts are document support fonts that you should never even see unless and until you should happen to open a document that needs one. Then, and only then, it should appear.

Unfortunately, it turned out that many 3rd party apps don't support that behaviour. They just list all 400-odd fonts and blame Apple. Long ago I grew tired of arguing with people about this, so I just released an app to fix it and stopped arguing. You can find a link to the app via the link posted above. As the developer, I can't post a link myself. It'll cost you though!

But I'm still fascinated by the rage that this issue generates. People spend $1000/year for software that does fonts incorrectly. Then they don't want to pay $10 for my app to fix it. All because the $1000/year apps refuses to use the APIs provided by the free operating system a decade ago. OK then.

Yes, I found the JKL Studios document and basically have been using it in conjunction with the Extensis Best Practices Guide to macOS Font Management (except it has not yet been updated to reflect Monterey). The FontBook export you described sounds, at the very least, like abracadabra so I can't wait to check it out.

Meanwhile, completely off topic, there is a Terminal command that allows you to select and copy text in QuickLook:

defaults write com.apple.finder QLEnableTextSelection -bool TRUE; killall Finder

Very convenient.

Thanks, Kurt et al, much appreciated.

At this point, the bigger question is what can be removed and set aside and what must not be touched.

If I’m remembering correctly, in your super thorough Font Management in macOS, the required fonts for each new OS changes (subtracted from or added to), so what could be removed in, for example, Catalina, doesn’t hold true for Monterey and perhaps Monterey has added type which is new and should be left alone.

I think I thought this big, lean and mean clean up was going to be fairly straightforward and it certainly is not.

I appreciate the time everyone has put in to assist in the process. I’m learning a lot; it’s an interesting aspect of the OS with some practical Typography/Prepress added to the mix. Thanks to all.
