Issues with transferring data
My computers are just "looking for the source" and stuck in the first step of finding the data on the migration assistant, is this normal, how long should I be waiting?
MacBook Air 13″, macOS 10.13

I did, I have both computers up, old computer is under migrate to another Mac and just wheel is spinning saying “discoverable as “computer name”
then the new Mac is under transfer info to this max and is spinning “looking for other sources”
Are both computer able to get on your local Wi-Fi network? Or have you placed them "near each other", i.e., within 10 feet of each other? do you get a verification code on either computer?
On your new Mac, can you see the old computer in Finder, if you click on the name of the new Mac, then "Network" ??
Ok I tried the above. I think this is the problem, my version on my Mac air the old computer is not what the migration needs. I don’t think my air will upgrade to the latest version due to space. What are my options? My Mac is on the OS HIGH SIERRa. And the new pro is on the OS X EL CAPITAN
it says “ selected source can’t be used for migration. This source contains a newer release of OS X. Your Mac requires an upgrade before you can migrate from this source.”
I already upgraded to the latest version possible on each computer.
If you have a Time machine backup of the old Mac, and can connect that you your new Mac, that is just as good as the original. ANY connection method will suffu=ice, even old USB-2 connection.
Otherwise, on the old Mac, use:
system Preferences > sharing > File sharing
and enable sharing the entire drive to all Admin Users.
When you go to make the connection, you will need the username and password of an Admin User on the OLD Mac to authenticate for access to the old Mac files.
Yes same wifi network and sitting right next to each other. I have not registered the new computer yet, I was told by Apple support chat rep to not set it up yet and do the migration first.
How do I do that? What other backup?
did you launch Migration Assistant on the OLD Mac as well, and tell it to transfer your information?
on the new computer, that thing in the lower left that says" other server" what happens when you click on that?
It says enter the address of a file server or a time machine backup
so what is the IP address of the old Mac? you can find it in
system Preferences > network
-OR- try Restarting the old Mac, then Restarting (or Shutting down and Restarting) the new Mac.
