This is more of an annoyance than a problem.
I have the app icons that I use most frequently in my Dock. Each time I open an app that I sometimes use, the icon remains in the Dock and I must click on it, go under 'Options' and select "Remove from Dock."
This is a pain. The default seems to be to keep an icon IN then manually remove it.
Any workaround to this default?

+1 Good thinking. If you have "Show recent applications in the Dock" set in System Preferences > Dock & Menu Bar the little buggers will "stick". I never have that set so I didn't think of it.

Yes! They show up in that section, so that is likely the reason.
I would never think to look there for 'recent items' — I always use the pull-down menu from the Apple.
And now I JUST looked at the prefs and unchecked the "Show recent applications in Dock" Voilà! Problem solved.

That's not normally what happens. Once you remove an app's icon from the Dock, it will appear when you launch the app but it should disappear when you quit the app.
Is this in a little divided off section between static Dock Icons on the left & Trash side of the Dock on the right?
