CardDav google account popup

Every time I edit a contact on my iPhone 12 I get a pop up saying 'password incorrect, enter the password for carddav account google. I tried to set up the carddav account following instructions I found online. It says my google password is incorrect. I just want to get rid of the pop up now, it is aggravating to the point of wanting to switch from gmail. I never used to have problems, and my google contactes synced from iphone to google contacts with no problems. this just started a few weeks ago.
