You can change the name on the computer itself. Go to System Preferences > Sharing
Where it says Computer Name:
enter the name you prefer to call your Mac.

Hi David
I'd already made the change in Sharing but hadn't realised that I'd need a restart to confirm. Had Macs long enough, so should have realised that simple step. Appreciate your help.
No worries Michael. It's a bit of a hidden feature, but I'm well familiar with it, being not just Local Network Administrator but Hardware Supervisor at home and over the years we've had new Macs adopting the existing name of the replaced Macs which have been put to other uses - but they needed a change of name. So rather than iMac 1 or iMac 2009 or whatever I have changed to a name descriptive of their use. In desperation recently I changed the name of an old MBP put to another task to Pink Mac, purely because that was the colour of the protective shell my wife had fitted. The shell has been chucked out yet the Mac still bears the name for identification purposes. My copy of the list like the one in your screenshot is rather idiosyncratic!
Yes, like you David, have had my fair share of Macs over the years and still struggle very time new technology comes along such as cloud storage. Just one of those individuals who can't kick bad habits, like over reliance on external drives for far too long. Like your naming conventions. Pink Mac, that's good.
