how do I erase content on 2017 mac

How do I erase the content on a 2017 MacOS High Sierra with Intel Core i5. I have tried getting to the disk utility using the command R function and my Mac keeps opening in regular mode. Using the disk utility in regular mode does not allow for the erase function.

Hi,

Are you holding down the Command R keys long enough? From Apple: "Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these two keys until you see an Apple logo or other image: Command (⌘) and R."
