I just purchased a MacBook Air it is at macOS Sierra 10.12.6

I am trying to update to a current version, at this point I cannot download any Microsoft office application. System states updates available ( I have even tried shutting down and rebooting)

I have also tried typing in system updates Monterey, system will update cause it needs to be at 10.15....

please help
