Group chats and Androids

So I was added to a group chat with all iPhone users for class, and I have an Android as my main phone. I was wondering why I wasn't getting any texts until I looked it up and found out you cannot add an Android user to an already existing iMessage chat. So, I have a Mac and my Android phone number is attached to my Apple ID. I have an unused SE from work laying around, so I turned it on, connected it to WiFi, and set it up with my Apple ID. I wanted to know if I will now receive the group chat messages, as when I go to my Apple ID settings it says that I can be reached by iMessage at the number attached to "Reachable At", aka my Android phone number. Or, do I have to ask one of my classmates to also add my email attached to my Apple ID to the contact they have for me? Or, will they have to remove me then re-add me? I am completely unfamiliar with iPhones and my partner has an Android too so I can't test it with them. Thanks.

Hello kdi7712,

We understand that you have questions related to group messages and we're happy to offer some clarification.

You are correct that your non-Apple device phone number cannot be added to a group iMessage. Our page Add and remove people in group text messages on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch covers this and other details related to group message options.

If you will not be activating the iPhone mentioned with your phone number, then having your associates add your Apple ID email address to their stored contact for you would allow you to receive iMessages to that Apple ID. Attempting to register a phone number that is not active on the iPhone would not be expected to be successful and could impact the delivery of your text messages to your non-Apple device. If you already attempted that process, visit Deregister iMessage to ensure your text messages deliver as expected.

We hope this helps!
