Migration of data from 2012 Mac to new mac

My data will not transfer to new Mac. Computer not frozen , wifi working. It is still at the transfer stage even after one day and still same massage . Any ideas how I can push the migration of data along . Medium speed band . Not much much to transfer from old computer computers , only school assignments . No photos , music or videos stored so can’t work out why nothing is being migrated over . Any suggestion ?
