iphone 6 needs to be unlocked using itunes but not recognized as a device

I need to unlock my iphone 6 so i can reset it, but it is currently disabled and says to 'connect to itunes'. When I do connect, it does not appear as one of my devices. Any thoughts on how to get this to work so I can unlock the phone?
