I finally got mine working today. I followed these instructions.
1. Remove your CAC from the reader
2. Open Terminal, by typing Terminal in the spotlight search
3. Copy the entire command below [starting with sudo, and ending with pivtoken] and paste it into the terminal window (or manually retype it)
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.smartcard DisabledTokens -array && sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.smartcard EnabledTokens -array com.apple.CryptoTokenKit.pivtoken
3a. I recommend you run this command twice.
4. When prompted for your computer password, know that the cursor will not move, type it in, and hit enter to process.
5. After performing these steps, the built in smart card ability should be enabled.
6. Logout of Terminal,
7. Restart computer
after you paste that command in terminal make sure you type exit. Then you can it should say it saved and you can exit out and restart your Mac.

I know, but that site remains the definitive resource. I'd start by removing old Certificates, and adding updated ones: https://militarycac.com/macnotes.htm#DoD_certificates
Yes I’m pretty familiar with the site. Safari recognizes the certs just fine, the computer is not reading information from the cac card. I factory reset the Mac, reinstalled the certs and it still does not read the card. The certs I’m using are from DISA so maybe I’ll try the ones from militarycac.com.
No solution yet. My reader works fine in a Windows PC and iPhone/iPad using subrosa. It’s like my M1 Mac is not reading after Monterey update. Im hoping that more users will start complaining so Apple can fix it.
This is crazy. I copied and pasted the script in terminal and it still does not read my CAC card. I'm using the SCR3310 CAC reader version 6.02. I guess my next step is to try a different CAC card reader. This is the same kind that we use at work. I'm IT and cannot figure this situation out. I got all my certs downloaded correctly to keychain.
Yup, I'm sure others are having the same problem, or soon will. This just started around January when I upgraded to Monterey. Before that, it was reading fine. I'm thinking that the M1 chip might have a glitch.
Super frustrated, and different problem. Just got the new M1 24' iMac. Came with Monterey preinstalled; no issues with upgrading. It worked perfectly out of the box. Now, all of a sudden yesterday, the browsers will no longer read and send the certificate from the CAC to the websites.
We changed nothing; just went to lunch! Came back and boom. Now both my new MBP and iMac have the same problem. Apple WTH did you do??????
https://militarycac.com/monterey.htm is the place to go for help.
That link was for OS Macbook Air with Intel chip. I have an M1. Thanks.
I am having the exact same issue. I am at a loss. Did you ever get this resolved?
That is crazy. Yeah man I tried everything too. I know if you use the right command it will tell you to enter your password. It’s weird and I have no clue how it happened in the first place.
I've been waiting for Apple to discover the issue and come up with an update, but I'm hearing nothing about the issue or the fix. It might be Safari related.
