I have a new iMac (M1) and it has Malwarebytes on it but I don't recall installing this. Is it native to Mac? I don't have it on my macbook. Do I need it? And if not: how can I remove it safely?

Yes, Malwarebytes is safe if you downloaded it from the developer's site. It is only needed when you have suspected malware on your system and can be quickly downloaded from the developer's site and used for a one time scan.
As you can't remember downloading this I suggest uninstalling it just to be on the safe side.
There are no known Windows-like Viruses in the wild that self replicate and affect macOS, because of the underling UNIX Foundation and Permission Limitation.
The Only thing this Antivirus software is protecting is the Bank Account of the Developers and for zero return to the User aside from the problems this software creates.

A truly new Mac will not come with MalwareBytes preinstalled; are there other users?
The genuine MalwareBytes will not harm your computer, but there may not be a need for it, That need is a personal decision only you can make.
I have used this app for several years and no issues however it has never found any malware on my Mac but I'm also very careful with the internet to preclude any issues in the first place.
