Auto-mount does not work on new M1 Macobook Air

All external media does NOT auto mount on my new Macbook Air M1 running Big Sur. The only way I can force the mount of SD cards or hard drives is to open Disk Utilities and do it there. Image Capture sometimes achieves this too.

I have done the usuals, upgraded OS, reboot, SMC reset, PRAM - but nothing will fix it. This occurred from out of the box.

First, an M1 Mac no longer has the standard startup key sequences that the Intel Macs utilized. SMC & PRAM Resets no longer apply to an M1 Mac. Here are your special startup options for an M1 Mac:

If your Mac starts up to Options with a gear icon - Apple Support

So you are saying this occurred before you installed any third party software? Third party software like anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software are known to interfere with the normal operation of macOS. Try booting into Safe Mode to see if it makes any difference since these types of apps should be disabled.

Make sure to disconnect all other external devices and connect just a single drive or SD card directly to the Mac. It is also possible the adapter, cable, dock/hub may be a problem.
