'Trashing' an external drive is a shortcut to unmount a drive prior to safe disconnect.
a) Just discounect and reconnect the drive.
b) Go to Disk utility, select the drive, and click 'mount'. Mount a volume that’s been ejected using Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support
