System Data taking up close to 100GB on new MacBook Pro?

I just upgraded from a 2017 MacBook Pro to a 2020 MacBook Pro. Both have 256GB of memory. However, once I transferred all of my flies to the new macBook, my available space shrunk from 100GB to 43GB, with the main culprit seeming to be system data, with over 99GB of space. That didn't exist on the old MacBook Pro. Can I get rid of this? Or should I just return the computer and upgrade the memory. I don't feel great about 40GB free for a computer I'd like to keep for a few years.

Hello mistakoch,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. Here is an explanation of what is contained in System Data.

"System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can’t manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac. You can manage your data that falls outside the other categories using Finder or the 3rd party apps that created it."

More info on storage categories can be found here: See used and available storage space on your Mac - Apple Support

Also, here are some helpful steps to manage your storage.

mistakoch,

That is correct.

You can’t manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac. You can manage your data that falls outside the other categories using Finder or the 3rd party apps that created it.

This information is detailed in the "System Data" section of See used and available storage space on your Mac

While we can't speculate as to why this differs from your previous Mac, if you're still experiencing issues, we'd recommend contacting Apple Support directly here: Get Support They may have the ability to investigate this a bit more with you.

Kind regards.

Thank you for the response. So it sounds like I cannot delete any system data. Any idea why it changed my space available so much as I moved to a new computer? It is all the same files but takes up 60GB more space.

I have already optimized/deleted everything else that I can, but the surprise addition of system data with the new computer is what is causing me grief!
